Busy Mom Reset: Overcome Burnout and Reclaim Your Energy and Joy

Updated: Dec 16, 2024

Beat Mom Burnout!
Beat Mom Burnout!

Have you ever been in a constant state of exhaustion? I mean, sick and tired of being sick and tired? Me Too! I have had times of feeling like I never felt fully rested no matter what I did. I lacked energy everyday and the thought of doing anything made it even worse.

Every moment of my day was filled with something. Cooking, feeding, washing, cleaning. Not to mention the frequent errands to the grocery store, appointments, practices, and pick ups. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, I worked a traditional 9 to 5 job. On the job I would have long task lists of things to do and often make mistakes and constantly fight falling asleep. Iced coffee became my best friend.

On top of the exhaustion and the lack of motivation to get things done. I felt like a terrible mother. Not having the energy to do much led to me not giving my all in cooking with love, cleaning sufficiently, and bailing on a family movie made me feel terrible. Even the desire to relax, take a break, or take a trip filled my heart with intense guilt.

What finally made me wake up to make a change was when I completely lost my cool. I was a bubbling pot running over and took it out on everyone in the house. I was rude and snappy. Every ask, and every touch sent me through the roof. It wasn’t right to react that way. It was nobody’s fault but mine.

I was burned out and it was time to switch some things up!

Why is it important to avoid burnout?

Burnout can lead to a number of physical, emotional, and mental health problems. It can also make it difficult to be a good parent. When you're burnt out, you're more likely to be irritable, impatient, and short-tempered. And my family has experienced it all. You may also have difficulty concentrating and making decisions which often led to doing absolutely nothing.

How to overcome burnout and reclaim your energy and joy?

  • Take time for yourself. Make sure you're scheduling some time for yourself each day, I set aside time for myself everyday, even if it's just a few minutes. As a stay at home mom I made sure to schedule in mandatory quiet/ rest time. This was for myself and the kids. This time can be used to do something you enjoy, such as reading, writing, coloring, or listening to music.

  • Delegate tasks. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your partner, family, or friends. I started to ask my husband what he was available to do from my to do list.  If you have children that can do age appropriate tasks, involve them to lighten your load and build their independence. I also delegate chores to different days throughout the week. I stopped pushing to complete everything in one day.

  • Set realistic expectations. Don't try to be everything to everyone. It's okay to say no to commitments that you don't have time for. Boundaries have become normal. I stopped stretching myself thin and let friends and family know when I did not have the capacity to do more.

  • Take care of yourself. Make sure you're eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, and regularly moving your body.. These things will help you feel better both physically and mentally. I took advantage of the time I’m standing around in the kitchen to do some leg exercises with resistance bands. I’m mindful of what I watch and listen to. I commit to spending time fulfilling my beliefs everyday. And I even made doctor appointments for myself too.
